Meet London’s Muslim-Friendly Bakeries

For the rest of us, we only require that a bakery’s offerings be fresh, sweet, and delicious. But for our brethren in the Islamic Faith, there’s the extra requirement of it being Halal.

Fortunately, there are bakeries in London that offer a lot of treats that are tasty and compatible with Muslim dietary requirements. Here are some of them where you can visit during your stay at the hotel South Kensington.

The Hummingbird

With branches in Soho, Notting Hill, South Kensington, Islington, and Spitalfields, this bakery chain is quite known for offering one of the best cupcakes in the entire London area.

One of their best-sellers is the Red Velvet Cupcake which features a crimson cake topped with white cream. There are also other options to choose from including brownies, cheesecakes, and pies. None of their offerings contains any gelatine of sorts and any pastry that was made with alcohol and other Haram items are given proper labels to avoid confusion.

The store is open from Monday to Sunday and from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

The Primrose Bakery

This bakery’s main branch is located at, well, Primrose Hill although it also operates in both Kensington High Street and the Covent Garden. They are open all day of the week and from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM (5:30 PM on Sunday).

Like many bakeries, the Primrose’s claim to fame is their cupcakes and they have been known to take theirs to the next level. Their pastries are served in an array of flavours and pastel colours which make them a feast for the eyes as much as they are for the mouth. They also have vegan and gluten-free options for those with dietary concerns.

DAB

Known formally as the Dominique Ansel Bakery, this Belgravia-based bakery is the most recent addition to London’s bake scene. They first opened their doors in 2016. Their Halal status comes from the fact that none of their treats is made with gelatine.

However, some pastries were made with alcohol which means that it would be best for you to inquire first before purchasing. Despite this, DAB’s selection of pies, cakes, and other pastries has been making headlines in London for their texture and, of course, flavour. The shop is open from 8 AM to 8 PM from Monday to Sunday, with Sunday openings at an hour later.

Cookies and Scream

Located at Holloway Road, Highbury East, this bakery has yet to achieve Halal certifications but their offerings are safe for Muslims, vegans, and others with strict dietary requirements. Their signature here is their ice cream cookie sandwiches which are considered the best way to cap off one’s trip through the area. Aside from that, the bakery offers cookies, brownies, and cakes made with low-fat, low-cholesterol, and dairy-free alternatives.

A word of warning, though: some of their pastries contain nuts and are made with soya milk. As such, it is best that you inquire from the staff first before ordering something. The bakery opens 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM Sunday to Thursday with closing on Friday and Saturday at 9:00 PM.

Apart from the foregoing, the restaurants in Kensington London give the tourist a variety of food choices with a little more sophistication.
